Wärtsilä to Equip Six New Gas Carrier Ships with Advanced LPG Systems

Wärtsilä to Deliver Gas Systems for Six New LPG Carrier Ships from China

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of the Wärtsilä technology group, has secured a new contract to provide cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for six medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) vessels. These new ships will be built at the Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding yard (YAMIC) in China for a Japanese shipowner. The contract, signed in Q3 2024, will help Wärtsilä maintain its leading position in the gas carrier industry.

Ships to Transport LPG Safely and Efficiently

The six vessels are designed to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a cleaner fuel option. Wärtsilä’s systems will make sure the ships operate safely and efficiently, both when transporting LPG as cargo and when using it as fuel. This dual-purpose approach will improve the environmental performance of the ships.

Barry Yang, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, China, said, “We’ve had a strong working relationship with the YAMIC shipyard, and we are happy to continue it with this order. It shows how reliable our gas handling and fuel systems are for this type of ship.”

About YAMIC Shipyard

The YAMIC shipyard is a joint venture between Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding. Wärtsilä’s equipment deliveries to the yard will begin in April 2025, aligning with the shipyard’s construction schedule.
