Wartsila raises level of offshore dynamic positioning with new high-performance thruster and propulsion control package

Wärtsilä Introduces New Thruster and Propulsion Control Solution for Enhanced DP Operations

Technology company Wärtsilä provides operators of ferries, tugs, and offshore boats with significantly enhanced operating performance and increased efficiency with the launch of a significant new product. In order to improve the accuracy and dependability of dynamic positioning (DP) operations, the company has developed a new high-performance thruster and propulsion control solution package that combines Wärtsilä’s WST-E embedded electric steerable thruster and WST-R retractable thrusters with an upgraded remote propulsion control system that includes an improved user interface called ProTouch.

Depending on the vessel layout, the retractable thrusters of the system can also be equipped with an 8-degree slanted propeller shaft as an option for the primary steerable thruster. By doing this, the interaction losses between the thrusters and the hull are greatly reduced, resulting in the highest possible effective thrust. When compared to non-tilted thrusters, the effective thrust can rise by up to 15–20%, resulting in a reduction in installed power required to achieve the same DP capability. This increases the unit’s efficiency and lowers fuel and emission usage. Furthermore, because these kinds of vessels need to respond quickly, the main thrusters are ready to provide faster steering speed and power ramping in order to guarantee a prompt response, should the DP capability call for it.

It is crucial for operators of offshore vessels to maintain safe and dependable stationkeeping. Wärtsilä provides a DP capability solution with a significant increase in efficiency that satisfies all necessary criteria thanks to this optimized thruster and control system. “This facilitates a significant decarbonization of vessel operations while saving time and money,” stated Lauri Tiainen, Director of Thrusters & Propulsion Control Systems at Wärtsilä Marine.

This introduction comprises three elements: the new Wärtsilä WST-E embedded electric steerable thruster, the introduction of three new Wärtsilä WST-R retractable thrusters (WST-09R, WST-14R and WST-18R –, and the updated Wärtsilä ProTouch Remote Propulsion Control System user interface. Wärtsilä also has its transverse thrusters available for inclusion in the package.

The primary thrusters are small in size and have an integrated electric motor set up in an L-drive arrangement. Since these units take up less room than standard L-drive thrusters, they can be installed beneath a vehicle deck or working surface. In general, the new units fill a niche that has traditionally been occupied by Z-drive thrusters. The system is made simpler and energy efficiency is increased with the new WST-E solution.

The technology behind the three new retractable thrusters from Wärtsilä is based on larger retractable thruster sizes that are currently on the market and have shown their worth. Since introducing the concept in 2013, Wärtsilä has led the industry in supplying thrusters with 8-degree slanted gearing.

The upgraded Wärtsilä ProTouch Remote Propulsion Control System, which debuted in 2013, considerably streamlines and enhances the idea by doing away with several tiny screens. It accomplishes this by using larger screens in addition to initially optimizing the number of panels used. This lessens the work required for the yards’ installation while also improving the navigators’ and chiefs’ situational awareness and simplicity of usage.
