Wärtsilä to Provide Advanced Ammonia Solution for Sustainable Shipping
Technology group Wärtsilä has announced its collaboration with Norway-based Skarv Shipping Solutions to power a new cargo vessel with its advanced Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia solution. This groundbreaking initiative will see the vessel being constructed at the Huanghai shipyard in China and marks a significant milestone in sustainable maritime innovation. The utilization of a 4-stroke ammonia engine is expected to result in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Skarv Shipping Solutions’ dedication to sustainable short-sea shipping in Northern Europe.
Ammonia as a Key Player in Achieving Net-Zero Emissions
Ammonia has emerged as a promising alternative fuel, playing a pivotal role in the industry’s efforts to achieve the net-zero emissions target by 2050. According to a report by Wärtsilä, sustainable fuels like ammonia are crucial in eliminating the remaining 73 percent of shipping emissions after implementing existing decarbonization solutions. The report emphasizes the importance of sustainable fuels in reaching the targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Wärtsilä’s Comprehensive Ammonia Solution
Wärtsilä will supply a complete ammonia solution for the new cargo vessel, including the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine, AmmoniaPac Fuel Gas Supply System, Wärtsilä Ammonia Release Mitigation System (WARMS), and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system designed for ammonia. The company’s solution design prioritizes safety, efficiency, and reliability, with total greenhouse gas emissions reduced by at least 90% when running the engine on sustainable ammonia compared to equivalent diesel engines.
Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine, commented on the development of the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine, highlighting the company’s commitment to decarbonizing shipping operations. The engine, part of the Wärtsilä 25 platform, draws on Wärtsilä’s extensive experience in low-pressure dual-fuel engines running on LNG. Equipment delivery for this project is scheduled to commence in Q4 2026.
Wärtsilä Cargo Handling System Chosen for New Very Large Ammonia Carrier
As the maritime industry continues its journey towards sustainability, partnerships like the one between Wärtsilä and Skarv Shipping Solutions are crucial in driving innovation and reducing environmental impact. Through the adoption of advanced technologies and sustainable fuels, the sector is poised to make significant strides towards a greener future.
