Wind Propulsion Technology Gains Momentum in Shipping

The shipping industry is witnessing a pivotal shift towards wind propulsion technology, as highlighted during a recent conference in Singapore. John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, reported a significant increase in inquiries from shipowners interested in adopting this innovative solution. The demand for wind propulsion is expected to escalate in the coming years, marking a crucial step towards decarbonization in maritime operations.
Surge in Demand for WindWings® Technology
During the ‘Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference’ held on March 26, 2025, Cooper emphasized the growing interest in BAR Technologies’ WindWings®—a rigid sail system designed to harness wind power for fuel savings. Each WindWing can save an average of 1.5 tonnes of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 4.6 tonnes on typical global shipping routes. This technology is gaining traction among shipowners, with BAR Technologies collaborating with Owners Union Maritime to equip up to 30 new vessels with WindWings®.
Cooper noted that the Union Maritime ships are currently under construction across eight different shipyards, indicating a busy period for BAR Technologies. He expressed optimism about the progress of their partnership, stating, “There’s no doubt wind has reached its tipping point, and more and more owners are coming to us to discuss how we can assist them in decarbonization.” Bhuvnesh Dogra, Head of Technical for Owners Union Maritime, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the effectiveness of WindWings® in achieving rapid carbon reduction.
The panel discussion also addressed concerns regarding supply and performance guarantees for the WindWings® technology. Cooper reassured attendees that BAR Technologies is prepared to meet the anticipated surge in demand. The company has partnered with China Merchants Energy Tech, which has the capacity to produce over 50 WindWings® annually and can scale up production significantly.
Production Capacity and Performance Assurance
Cooper elaborated on the production capabilities, stating that China Merchants is currently manufacturing ten WindWings® at a time and can potentially increase output to hundreds. He dismissed concerns about supply shortages, emphasizing that BAR Technologies has resolved issues related to lead times. The original 37.5-meter wing can be delivered within eight months of ordering, while the newly launched 20 and 24-meter wings will be available in just seven months.
Moreover, Cooper highlighted the company’s commitment to providing performance guarantees for their products. He stated, “I want our clients to have a performance guarantee. We know exactly what the thrust of the wings will be. There’s no risk for us and no performance risk to our clients.” He encouraged collaboration within the industry to demonstrate the capabilities of WindWings® and ensure that shipowners receive the performance they require.
As the shipping industry moves towards more sustainable practices, the adoption of wind propulsion technology like WindWings® represents a significant step forward in reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency.
