Winking Shipping buys Imabari-built newcastlemax

Winking Shipping Expands Fleet with New Purchase

In a significant move for its growing fleet, China’s Winking Shipping has acquired the 14-year-old Newcastlemax bulk carrier, HL Saijo, for approximately $38 million. This vessel, built by Imabari and weighing in at 206,300 dwt, was purchased on bareboat hire purchase terms from South Korea’s H-Line Shipping. The acquisition marks Winking Shipping’s second Newcastlemax vessel, reflecting the company’s ongoing expansion strategy in the bulk shipping sector.

Strategic Expansion of Winking Shipping’s Fleet

Winking Shipping has been actively enhancing its fleet in recent years, with the addition of several capesize vessels. The company’s current modern fleet largely consists of ultramax ships, with five vessels constructed at COSCO Zhoushan Shipping Heavy Industry. Notably, three of these ultramax ships were delivered in 2023 and 2024, while two more, compliant with IMO Tier III standards, are anticipated to join the fleet by 2027.

Historic Growth in Capesize Fleet Reaches Milestone

As of now, Winking Shipping operates around 1.2 million deadweight tons (dwt) across its fleet of 15 bulk carriers. The company has ambitious growth plans, targeting a total of 20 ships in the near future. With offices located in Rizhao, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Adelaide, Winking Shipping is well-positioned to continue its trajectory in the competitive maritime industry.

This latest acquisition underscores Winking Shipping’s commitment to expanding its operational capabilities and reinforces its presence in the bulk shipping market.
