‘World’s largest’ sail-powered cargo ship launched in Turkey
The Neoliner Origin, the world’s largest cargo ship powered primarily by sails, has been launched at RMK Marine shipyard in Tuzla, Turkey. This innovative vessel, measuring 136 meters long and 24.2 meters wide, represents a significant advancement in sustainable maritime freight. Constructed by the French shipping company Neoline, the ship aims to deliver goods across oceans with minimal environmental impact.
Revolutionizing Maritime Freight with Wind Power
Neoline began construction of the Neoliner Origin in November 2023, with a clear goal: to create a highly efficient cargo ship. Equipped with two towering 90-meter masts and 3,000 square meters of sails, the Neoliner Origin is designed to harness wind power effectively. The company claims that this vessel will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 80% compared to conventional ships of similar size.
Wind power will provide 60-70% of the ship’s propulsion. This reliance on natural energy sources marks a significant shift in the shipping industry, which has long been criticized for its carbon footprint. In addition to wind propulsion, the Neoliner Origin utilizes hybrid diesel-electric power. It also generates energy from its own wake, further minimizing emissions and enhancing efficiency.
The Neoliner Origin is classified as a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel, making it ideal for transporting rolling equipment and oversized freight. It has a conventional cargo capacity of 5,300 tonnes or 265 containers. Furthermore, the ship can accommodate refrigerated cargo, ensuring that food and beverages remain fresh during transatlantic voyages. This combination of innovative design and sustainable technology positions the Neoliner Origin as a leader in the future of eco-friendly shipping.
