World's Largest Suction Sails Installed on Juice Carrier

Spanish company bound4blue has made waves in the maritime industry by installing the world’s largest suction sails on the Atlantic Orchard, a juice carrier owned by Wisby Tankers. This significant upgrade, completed during the vessel’s 10-year survey at Astander Shipyard in Spain, is expected to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by approximately 10%. The installation of the four 26-meter high eSAILs marks a pivotal moment in the push for greener shipping solutions.
Innovative Technology Enhances Vessel Performance
The installation of the eSAILs on the Atlantic Orchard is a notable achievement for bound4blue, as it represents the third installation of suction sails this year. Originally a dry bulk vessel, the Atlantic Orchard underwent a conversion in 2020 to adapt to the juice transportation market. The new sails will allow the vessel to harness wind energy effectively, leveraging the Wind Reward Factor to improve its operational efficiency.
During the installation process, each eSAIL was fitted in under a day, showcasing the efficiency of bound4blue’s technology. The sails were strategically placed in positions previously occupied by four deck cranes, with all necessary electrical and structural modifications completed in a single yard visit. Miguel Bermúdez, CEO and co-founder of bound4blue, emphasized the project’s success, stating, “This specialist project is a prime example of how our technology meets customer needs.”
In addition to the environmental benefits, the eSAILs offer a typical payback period of less than five years, making them an attractive option for shipping companies. They can be installed on various types of vessels, including tankers, bulkers, and ferries. Recent orders from major shipping firms such as Maersk Tankers and Eastern Pacific Shipping highlight the growing interest in sustainable maritime solutions.
Future of Sustainable Shipping
The installation of suction sails is part of a broader trend in the shipping industry towards sustainability and compliance with environmental regulations. The Atlantic Orchard is now poised to benefit from the CII, EU ETS, and other regulatory advantages, positioning it as a leader in eco-friendly shipping practices. As the maritime sector faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, innovations like bound4blue’s eSAILs are crucial in driving the industry towards a greener future.
With the successful installation on the Atlantic Orchard, bound4blue continues to demonstrate its commitment to revolutionizing maritime operations through innovative technology. The company’s growing portfolio of installations reflects a significant shift in how shipping companies are approaching sustainability, paving the way for a more environmentally responsible industry.
