Wuchang Shipbuilding Installs First Rotor Sail on Wind-Assisted Ro-Ro Carrier for LDA
On September 8, Wuchang Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), achieved a significant milestone by successfully installing the first rotary sail on the “Spirit of Toulouse.” This vessel is the first in a series of wind-assisted RORO carriers being constructed for the French shipowner LD ARMATEURS (LDA). The installation of the rotary sail marks the official commencement of the vessel’s wind propulsion system.
Innovative Wind Propulsion System for Enhanced Efficiency
The “Spirit of Toulouse” is equipped with six Norsepower rotor sails, each towering 35 meters high with a diameter of 5 meters. These sails are paired with two dual-fuel engines capable of utilizing green methanol or marine diesel. Notably, this vessel sets a record for the highest number of rotor sails installed on a Ro-Ro vessel of its kind.
The rotor sails will work in conjunction with the methanol propulsion system to harness wind energy, providing additional thrust and significantly reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This system enables zero sulfur emissions and an impressive reduction of over 80% in nitrogen oxide emissions. The utilization of green methanol fuel allows for near-zero-carbon voyages, emphasizing the vessel’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Safety Milestone Achieved for Wind-Assisted Ro-Ro Carrier
On September 9, the first wind-assisted Ro-Ro carrier successfully completed a safety review for its methanol bunkering process in Shanghai. This critical milestone confirms the vessel’s compliance with safety requirements for bunkering operations, ensuring a solid safety foundation for upcoming mooring trials, sea trials, and timely delivery.
