Yanmar Advances Hydrogen Engine Production

Yanmar Power Technology, a subsidiary of Japan’s Yanmar Holdings, has received government approval for its hydrogen-fueled engines and fuel cell systems. This approval, granted on January 9, 2025, is part of Japan’s initiative to promote zero-emission vessels. The project aims to position Japan as a leader in next-generation ship technology.

Investment in Zero-Emission Vessels

The Japanese government has selected 16 proposals under the “Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project.” This initiative will channel over JPY 120 billion (approximately $777.8 million) into the shipbuilding and marine equipment sectors. The focus is on developing vessels that utilize alternative fuels like ammonia and hydrogen. By investing in these technologies, Japan aims to capture a significant share of the global market for zero-emission ships.

Yanmar Power Technology plans to create an advanced production system for zero-emission ships powered by hydrogen and batteries. This initiative is designed to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance industrial competitiveness. The company is committed to the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050, which seeks to foster a sustainable society through innovative marine technology.

In August 2023, Yanmar introduced a hydrogen fuel cell system specifically for marine applications. The company has also conducted successful onshore tests of a pilot-ignition hydrogen 4-stroke high-speed engine, achieving a rated output of around 500 kW. With the backing of the Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project, Yanmar aims to accelerate its hydrogen engine production timeline, moving its targets from 2050 to 2040. The goal is to achieve 100% carbon-neutral marine power products, including hydrogen engines, by 2045, surpassing the greenhouse gas reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization.

In a related development, Yanmar Holdings announced plans to restructure Yanmar Power Technology into two separate entities by October 2025. This reorganization will create one company focused on industrial engines and another dedicated to large power products, further enhancing its capabilities in the marine sector.
