ZEMBA deal will see Gasum bunker Hapag-Lloyd ships with 20,000 tonnes of bio-LNG
Gasum to Supply Bio-LNG to Hapag-Lloyd Under ZEMBA Initiative
Gasum Oy, a Nordic energy company, has been selected to supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) to Hapag-Lloyd’s containerships for a two-year period. This arrangement stems from Hapag-Lloyd’s success in securing the first tender by the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), an initiative aimed at promoting zero-emission ocean shipping. The tender requires the use of waste-based bio-LNG, which is capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90%.
ZEMBA, established in 2023 by the Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (coZEV) and facilitated by the Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program, brings together major global brands committed to reducing their carbon footprint in shipping. Founding members such as Amazon, Patagonia, and Tchibo, along with others like Nike and Meta, have collectively agreed to purchase environmental credits for over 1 billion twenty-foot shipping container-miles of zero-emission shipping between Singapore and Rotterdam for the 2025-2026 period.

Gasum’s role in this initiative is pivotal, as the company will supply the bio-LNG needed to meet the stringent sustainability criteria of the ZEMBA tender. This partnership highlights the growing momentum in the maritime sector towards greener practices, with Gasum’s bio-LNG, derived from waste feedstocks like biowaste and sewage sludge, playing a key role in reducing emissions. Gasum’s ability to provide bio-LNG bunkering services to vessels running on liquefied natural gas further emphasizes the flexibility and impact of this clean energy solution in the maritime industry.
