Descendant of salvaged Maine boat’s namesake wants to save it
After seven months underwater off the coast of Harpswell, the historic fishing boat Jacob Pike has been raised by the U.S. Coast Guard. However, the future of the vessel remains uncertain as efforts are being made to prevent its destruction. Sumner Rugh, a student at the Merchant Marine Academy in New York and the great-great-grandson of Jacob Pike, is leading a nonprofit organization with the goal of refurbishing the boat for educational purposes.
The Jacob Pike Organization, founded by Rugh, aims to preserve the vessel’s historical significance. However, acquiring ownership has proven to be a complex challenge. Although the Coast Guard towed the boat to Portland for disposal, Rugh requested that the boat be donated to his organization. Unfortunately, since the Coast Guard does not own the vessel, it cannot be donated, leaving the future of the Jacob Pike uncertain.

Pamela Manns, a lieutenant with the U.S. Coast Guard, explained that the decision to dispose of the boat was made in collaboration with various parties involved. The boat’s owner, Cyrus Cleary, faced disagreements with the Coast Guard regarding its removal, leading to the town declaring it abandoned and granting the Coast Guard the authority to remove it under the Clean Water Act. The cost of removing the boat, estimated at around $300,000, has raised concerns about the financial responsibilities that could be passed on to Rugh’s organization if they acquire the title.
Rugh’s passion for preserving the Jacob Pike stems from its rich history. Built in 1949 by Newbert & Wallace in Thomaston, the vessel was one of the first refrigerated sardine carriers, symbolizing Maine’s fishing heritage. Rugh envisions the boat being restored at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast and eventually serving as an educational platform for people to learn about Maine’s fishing and shipbuilding industries. However, with the boat’s destruction imminent, time is running out for Rugh and his organization to secure its future.
