MOL Invests in HIF Global, a U.S.-based company of e-Fuels

Toward the Decarbonization of the Mobility Industry with synthetic fuels

MOL Joins Forces with HIF Global to Produce Clean Fuels for a Greener World

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a large shipping company based in Japan, has made a big decision to invest in a company called HIF Global. This was announced by MOL’s President & CEO, Takeshi Hashimoto. MOL is investing in HIF Global through its U.S.-based subsidiary, MOL Clean Energy, to help develop clean energy fuels called e-Fuels. HIF Global, based in Houston, Texas, works on e-Fuels projects all around the world.

HIF Global is known for creating synthetic fuels that are cleaner and better for the environment. These synthetic fuels include e-fuels and e-methanol. They are made by using green hydrogen, which comes from renewable energy like wind and solar power, and recycled CO2. These clean fuels will be produced in four countries: the U.S., Chile, Uruguay, and Australia. HIF plans to produce 4 million tons of synthetic fuel every year, which could help greatly reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.

What Are e-Fuels and Why Are They Important?

e-Fuels and e-Methanol are types of fuel that can be used in many different industries and can make a big impact in the fight against climate change. These fuels have a smaller carbon footprint, meaning they don’t release as much harmful CO2 when burned. The process starts with using renewable energy sources, like solar or wind, to produce green hydrogen. This hydrogen is then combined with CO2 to create clean fuels that can power vehicles, planes, and even ships.

MOL’s investment will help HIF Global make these clean fuels widely available. The company will first produce e-Gasoline and e-Methanol. In the future, HIF plans to create e-SAF, which stands for synthetic sustainable aviation fuel. This fuel could one day power airplanes in a way that is much better for the environment. They also plan to produce synthetic chemicals, which are used in various products around the world.

In March, MOL teamed up with other companies like Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd. and HIF USA LLC to build a supply chain for e-Fuels and e-Methanol. By investing in HIF Global, MOL aims to create an entire system for producing and delivering clean fuels and CO2. This will not only help reduce pollution from vehicles but also from ships, which play a big role in the world’s transportation system.

HIF Global: Leading the Charge in Clean Energy

HIF Global is the leading company in e-Fuels development. Their goal is to turn hydrogen into carbon-neutral synthetic fuels that can replace traditional fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel. Because these synthetic fuels can be used in regular cars, ships, and planes without needing new technology, they are a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

HIF’s name stands for “Highly Innovative Fuels,” which matches their goal of using new ideas to help the planet. The company has already started making e-Fuels at their demonstration facility in Chile, called the Haru Oni Plant. This plant produced its first batch of e-Fuel in December 2022. Now, HIF is planning to build larger, commercial-scale plants in places like Texas (USA), Chile, Uruguay, and Australia. These new plants will help produce even more clean fuels to reduce pollution and make transportation greener.

Conclusion

With MOL’s investment in HIF Global, the world is one step closer to reducing pollution and creating cleaner energy. Together, these companies are working hard to develop and deliver synthetic fuels that could make cars, ships, and even airplanes less harmful to the environment. By focusing on green hydrogen and recycled CO2, they are setting the stage for a cleaner and more sustainable future for everyone.
