Russian Maritime Experts Join International Meeting on Ship Safety

Representatives from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) recently took part in the 10th session of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 10). This important meeting, held under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), focused on updating global safety standards for transporting cargoes and operating ships.

The RS team, along with other international delegates, discussed new safety rules to improve how ships carry cargo and use alternative fuels. Below are some of the key highlights from the meeting:

Key Outcomes of the CCC 10 Meeting

  1. Interim Safety Guidelines for Ships Using Ammonia as Fuel
    • The group finalized guidelines for ships using ammonia as a fuel source. Ammonia is a cleaner fuel option, but it must be handled carefully due to safety risks. These guidelines will be submitted to the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) 109 for approval in December 2024.
  2. Changes to the International Gas Carrier (IGC) Code
    • Over 100 new amendments to the IGC Code were discussed, aiming to improve the design and operation of ships carrying liquefied gas. Key changes include:
      • Using LPG and ethane as ship fuel.
      • New rules for CO2 transportation and improved emergency shutdown (ESD) systems.
      • Updated standards for cargo storage systems and tank fill limits for Type C tanks.
    • The updated code will be reviewed in stages, with final approval expected by 2028.
  3. Revised Rules for Enclosed Spaces on Ships
    • The delegates also agreed on new safety recommendations for entering enclosed spaces on ships. These spaces can be dangerous without proper precautions. The updated rules will be reviewed by MSC 110 in June 2025.
  4. Updates to the Solid Bulk Cargo Code (IMSBC)
    • Amendments to the IMSBC Code, which governs the transportation of solid bulk materials, are being finalized. These will be reviewed by the Editorial and Technical Group (E&T) at their 41st meeting before submission to MSC 110.
  5. Addressing Fire Risks and Cargo Safety
    • The group discussed ways to reduce risks related to container fires and vehicle transport on ships. They also explored new strategies to prevent container losses at sea, which is a growing concern for global shipping.
