ClassNK awards notation for safe transportation of EVs to “K” LINE’s car carrier “TEXAS HIGHWAY”

ClassNK Certifies “TEXAS HIGHWAY” with Fire Safety Notation for EV Transport

ClassNK, a well-known ship classification society, has awarded the “AFVC” (Additional Fire-Fighting Measures for Vehicle Carrier) notation to TEXAS HIGHWAY, a car carrier operated by “K” LINE. This certification recognizes the ship’s advanced fire protection measures, especially for safely transporting electric vehicles (EVs) with unique fire risks.

Why EVs Need Special Fire Safety Measures on Ships

Electric vehicles are becoming more common but can be challenging to manage during fires. EV fires are harder to put out and may restart even after being extinguished, creating serious concerns for shipping companies transporting them across seas.

To address these issues, ClassNK has developed Guidelines for the Safe Transportation of Electric Vehicles. These guidelines explain how EV fires behave and suggest ways to respond effectively. They also provide five different types of AFVC notations, each indicating specific fire safety measures onboard a ship.

How the TEXAS HIGHWAY Earned the Fire-Fighting (FF) Notation

The TEXAS HIGHWAY earned the FF (Fire Fighting) notation after meeting ClassNK’s safety standards. ClassNK confirmed that the ship’s firefighting manual contains the necessary information to handle fires involving EVs.

The ship also has the required equipment to fight fires quickly and efficiently. With these safety measures in place, ClassNK believes that the crew can respond to EV fires rapidly, reducing the chance of the fire spreading or re-igniting.

ClassNK’s Commitment to EV Safety at Sea

ClassNK aims to make EV transport safer by creating clear standards and evaluating ships based on these guidelines. As electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, shipping companies must adopt such fire safety measures to ensure smooth and secure transportation.

The certification ceremony for the TEXAS HIGHWAY marks another step toward safer EV transport on sea routes, setting a good example for other car carriers to follow.

This initiative highlights the increasing need for specialized fire safety standards in the shipping industry as electric vehicles become a common cargo type. Through efforts like this, companies such as “K” LINE and ClassNK are leading the way in preparing for future shipping challenges.
