BAR Technologies signs deal with WindWaves to manufacture new 20m & 24m WindWings®

WindWaves Expands Partnership with BAR Technologies to Launch Smaller WindWings® in Europe

11th November 2024BAR Technologies (BAR), a leader in wind-powered marine technology, has expanded its partnership with WindWaves, a European company specializing in wind energy solutions. This agreement will allow WindWaves to manufacture, sell, and install BAR’s new smaller WindWings® models—20 meters and 24 meters—in Europe. These compact wind sails are designed to bring sustainable wind propulsion to smaller ships, making cleaner energy options available for a broader range of vessels.

Building on Previous Success

Earlier this year, BAR and WindWaves had an agreement to build and sell BAR’s larger 37.5m WindWings®. With this new deal, they now aim to target smaller vessels, such as handysize bulkers and chemical tankers, making BAR’s innovative wing sail technology more accessible across different types of ships.

By using WindWaves’ manufacturing skills and BAR’s design, the two companies hope to expand the reach of wind-powered sails to European customers and beyond. WindWaves will oversee the production and supply of these sails and will also manage training for crews on how to use them, ensuring that ship crews are fully prepared for smooth, efficient operations.

A Cleaner Future for Shipping

The 20m and 24m WindWings® are lighter and simpler to install than previous models. This makes them ideal for smaller ships, which traditionally have limited options for adding wind-powered technology. Each WindWing® can help save more than 500 tons of CO2 each year. In addition, the investment in these wings pays for itself in less than five years because of fuel savings.

Positive Environmental Impact

BAR Technologies first launched the larger WindWings® models on vessels like the Pyxis Ocean and Berge Olympus, achieving up to 32% less energy use per nautical mile. This success shows that wind propulsion can be a reliable, tested option for shipping companies that want to reduce their environmental impact.

Moving Toward a Sustainable Shipping Industry

John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, expressed excitement about this step forward. “WindWaves has a strong history in wind energy, and this new deal is exciting because it means we can now serve more customers across Europe with these smaller, more versatile WindWings®.”

WindWaves’ General Manager, Roberto Bouzas, also highlighted the need for greener options in the shipping industry. “With all the changes in regulations and the growing demand for cleaner options, we are glad to support BAR Technologies with this latest addition. We are moving closer to a decarbonized shipping future.”

BAR Technologies Partners With Groke Technologies To Pioneer Enhanced Navigation Solutions For Windwings®

Trusted by the Industry

The fuel-saving benefits of WindWings® were validated by DNV-Maritime in May 2024, proving their effectiveness. By fitting WindWings® on ships, operators can reduce their carbon footprint and fuel costs, making it a smart choice for environmentally responsible shipping.

As shipping continues to transform, BAR Technologies and WindWaves are helping to make eco-friendly options more accessible. Through this partnership, they aim to support a cleaner, greener shipping industry in Europe and around the world.
