Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf Advances Sustainable Dockings with Shore Power

Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf is making strides in sustainable ship repair and maintenance with a new shore power installation. This initiative aims to enhance the yard’s ability to provide clean energy for various vessel types. By partnering with Elma Systems, Damen has expanded its shore power capabilities to accommodate the needs of all vessels that visit the yard. This development aligns with the company’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting maritime sustainability.

Enhancing Shore Power Capabilities

Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf has long been a leader in providing shore power solutions. For years, the yard has offered low-emission energy to vessels undergoing repairs. However, the previous system only supported 50Hz, which limited its compatibility with many offshore, navy, and fishing vessels. Commercial Manager Jeen van der Werf noted that this incompatibility often forced the yard to rely on diesel-powered generators, which contradicted their environmental goals.

Recognizing the need for a more versatile solution, Damen sought to upgrade its shore power system. The recent installation, developed in collaboration with Elma Systems, now provides clean energy converted to 60Hz. This upgrade allows the yard to cater to a broader range of vessels, ensuring that all clients can benefit from sustainable energy during their maintenance and repair projects. The new shore power system has a capacity of 355A and can support up to 250kVA, with options for additional power sources if needed.

This advancement not only enhances the yard’s operational efficiency but also significantly reduces carbon emissions. By eliminating the need for diesel generators, Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf is taking a substantial step toward achieving its sustainability goals. The yard’s commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in its proactive approach to adopting cleaner technologies.

Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

The successful implementation of the new shore power system is a testament to the effective collaboration between Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf and Elma Systems. The two companies worked closely to develop a customized solution that meets the diverse needs of the yard’s clientele. Marco Roman from Elma Systems expressed gratitude for the partnership, highlighting the importance of teamwork in creating innovative solutions for the maritime industry.

The rotary converter developed by Elma Systems plays a crucial role in this project. It efficiently converts shore power to the required 60Hz, ensuring that all vessels can access clean energy while docked. This technology not only supports Damen’s sustainability efforts but also sets a precedent for other shipyards looking to reduce their environmental impact.

Moreover, the new shore power system provides Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf with a competitive advantage. By eliminating the costs associated with hiring diesel generators, the yard can offer more competitively priced projects to its clients. This financial benefit, combined with the environmental advantages, positions Damen as a leader in sustainable maritime solutions.
