Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding ushers in 2025 with first ship delivery
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Delivers Advanced Tanker to Thenamaris
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a prominent shipbuilder in China and part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has successfully delivered a new tanker named Seascout to the Greek shipping company Thenamaris. This delivery marks a significant achievement for Waigaoqiao, showcasing its capabilities in constructing advanced maritime vessels. The Seascout is a 114,000 deadweight ton (dwt) tanker, representing the latest generation of Aframax product tankers.
Innovative Design and Features of Seascout
The Seascout is not just any tanker; it is a product of innovative design and engineering. Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding has independently developed and designed this vessel, ensuring it meets modern maritime standards. The Seascout is classified as a long-range 2 (LR2) tanker, which means it is built for efficiency and performance over long distances.
One of the standout features of the Seascout is its hydrodynamic energy-saving ducts and vortex-eliminating fins. These components significantly enhance the vessel’s hydrodynamic performance, allowing it to move through water more efficiently. Additionally, the tanker is equipped with a green power system, which further boosts its energy efficiency.
The Seascout has been verified to comply with the third stage of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standard. It also meets the Tier III emission requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and adheres to the latest sulfur oxide emission regulations. This makes the Seascout a green ship, combining environmental protection with energy savings, safety, and economic viability. With a length of 250 meters and a width of 44 meters, the vessel is designed to navigate various maritime conditions effectively.
Waigaoqiao’s Growing Fleet and Future Plans
The delivery of the Seascout is part of a busy January 2025 for Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, which has seen numerous vessels completed and delivered. The company has a strong track record, having delivered nearly 60 Aframax product tankers to date. Currently, it holds more than 20 orders for new vessels, indicating a robust demand for its products.
In addition to Aframax tankers, Waigaoqiao is diversifying its shipbuilding portfolio. The company plans to deliver over 20 vessels throughout the year, including 8,600 CEU LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), 7,000 TEU medium-sized containerships, and more Aframax product tankers.
Moreover, Waigaoqiao has begun construction on a sixth floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit, a 10,800 CEU dual-fuel PCTC, and 158,000-ton Suezmax tankers. The company is also making strides in the cruise ship sector, with the second locally made large cruise ship set to celebrate key construction milestones this year. This follows the successful float-out of China’s first large cruise ship at Waigaoqiao in late 2021.
