HD Hyundai Pursues U.S. Shipyard Acquisition

In a move to comply with the United States’ requirement for foreign shipbuilders to hold at least half of the stakes in a U.S. shipyard for warship construction, HD Hyundai is ramping up efforts to acquire a U.S. shipyard. This strategic decision falls under the MASGA (Make America’s Ships Great Again) phase, aimed at enhancing shipbuilding collaboration between South Korea and the United States.

Negotiations and Preparations for Acquisition

Industry analysts revealed that HD Hyundai is currently in talks with multiple companies to secure a U.S. shipyard. To facilitate this process, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, an intermediate holding company of HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding sector, established a local U.S. subsidiary, ‘HD Hyundai USA,’ in the first half of the year. This subsidiary is anticipated to oversee significant local investments in the United States, including the eventual acquisition of a U.S. shipyard.

Speeding Up Acquisition Efforts

The urgency to acquire a U.S. shipyard by HD Hyundai stems from recent developments in the United States. President Donald Trump issued an order on August 13, allowing foreign shipbuilders to construct up to two U.S. warships, under the condition of establishing or acquiring a shipyard in the U.S. or holding a majority stake in a shipyard. Consequently, HD Hyundai is expediting its acquisition plans to meet these requirements and capitalize on the new opportunities in the U.S. shipbuilding market.

Future Prospects and Expectations

With meticulous planning and preparations, HD Hyundai is poised to achieve tangible outcomes in the near future. Last year, the company partnered with global private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management and the Korea Development Bank to initiate a joint investment program for the South Korea-U.S. shipbuilding industry. Chairman Chung Ki-sun affirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing U.S. shipyards, developing advanced vessels, and expanding the shipbuilding equipment supply chain.

As HD Hyundai progresses towards securing a U.S. shipyard, it positions itself for direct benefits in the MASGA phase. Industry insiders anticipate significant advancements in the South Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation project, with orders linked to MASGA expected to surge once the acquisition is finalized.

In response to inquiries, HD Hyundai stated, “We are exploring various strategies, including the acquisition of a U.S. shipyard and equity investments, to support the successful implementation of the MASGA project. However, no concrete decisions have been made at this time.”
