L&T Launches Second Multi-Purpose Vessel for Indian Navy

On January 13, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) proudly launched the second multi-purpose vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy at its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. The vessel, named INS Utkarsh, was inaugurated by Dr. Sushmita Misra Singh, the wife of Union Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi, and senior leaders from L&T. This launch marks a significant milestone in India’s naval capabilities and reflects the ongoing commitment to enhancing national security.

Accelerated Production and Advanced Capabilities

The launch of INS Utkarsh comes just three months after the unveiling of the first MPV, INS Samarthak. This rapid production schedule highlights L&T’s efficiency and dedication to meeting the Indian Navy’s needs. Currently, INS Samarthak is undergoing tests and trials, preparing for its eventual delivery. The MPVs are designed to serve multiple roles, making them highly specialized assets for the Navy. They will function as trial platforms for developing next-generation weapons and sensors, conduct maritime surveillance, and provide humanitarian assistance. Additionally, these vessels will combat sea pollution and facilitate the launch and recovery of both surface and aerial assets.

Measuring 107 meters in length and 18.6 meters in width, the MPVs have a displacement of over 3,750 tonnes. The design and engineering of these vessels were carried out at L&T’s in-house Warship Design Centre in Chennai, while construction took place at the Kattupalli shipyard. This combination of advanced design and robust construction capabilities positions L&T as a key player in India’s defense sector.

Commitment to National Security and Future Projects

During the launch event, A.T. Ramchandani, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, emphasized the significance of this achievement. He stated, “The successful launch of the second MPV ahead of schedule underscores L&T’s unwavering commitment to bolster India’s national security.” This commitment is evident in L&T’s ongoing projects, which include not only the two MPVs but also three Cadet Training Ships and six additional defense vessels for the Indian Navy. These projects are being executed under a public-private partnership model, showcasing L&T’s versatility and capability in the defense sector.

Moreover, the Kattupalli shipyard is recognized as one of the most advanced shipbuilding and repair facilities in India. It is equipped with state-of-the-art ship-lift, dry, and wet berths, allowing for concurrent shipbuilding and repair operations. Currently, the shipyard is also engaged in the repair of the Indian naval ship INS Tir. This comprehensive approach to shipbuilding and repair further solidifies L&T’s role as a vital contributor to India’s maritime defense strategy.
