Fire Breaks Out on Container Barge Hermes in Belgium

On the evening of January 14, a fire erupted on the self-propelled container barge Hermes while it was navigating the Ghent Ringvaart near Merelbeke, Belgium. The incident involved a 73-meter-long vessel, identified by its MMSI number 205490990. Initial reports indicate that the fire originated from a boiler, which subsequently released a significant amount of dense smoke. Fortunately, local authorities and firefighters were quickly alerted to the situation.

Quick Response from Local Authorities

Upon receiving the emergency call, local firefighters arrived at the scene promptly. By the time they reached the Hermes, the fire had already been extinguished. This swift response likely prevented any further damage to the vessel or the surrounding environment. Firefighters conducted a thorough assessment of the situation, ensuring that the fire was completely out and that there were no lingering hazards.

Their primary task was to ventilate the vessel, allowing any remaining smoke to dissipate. After ensuring that the area was safe, the firefighters stood down about an hour later. Remarkably, there were no reports of injuries among the crew or any pollution released into the waterway. This incident highlights the importance of quick action in emergency situations, which can significantly mitigate potential damage and ensure the safety of all involved.
