Kongsberg Maritime to Equip Indonesian Navy Vessels
Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to supply propulsion and maneuvering systems for two KCR-70 Fast Attack Craft (FAC) being constructed for the Indonesian Navy. The vessels are being built by Turkish company TAIS at the Sefine Shipyard in Türkiye. Steel cutting for the first two KCR-70 craft began in October 2024. These 70-meter vessels, with a displacement of 850 tonnes, are designed for high-speed operations and a variety of military missions.
Advanced Propulsion Systems for Enhanced Performance
The KCR-70 fast attack craft will feature a sophisticated propulsion package that includes twin controllable pitch propeller (CPP) Promas systems and a single Kamewa waterjet. This setup is engineered to enhance the vessels’ patrol efficiency and high-speed capabilities. The propulsion system combines twin diesel engines with a 23MW gas turbine, optimizing power and agility.
The waterjet system, with a diameter of 160 cm, is capable of discharging over 30 cubic meters of water per second, propelling the craft at speeds exceeding 40 knots. This impressive performance is the result of extensive hydrodynamic analysis conducted by Kongsberg Maritime to ensure seamless integration with the hull design.
The KCR-70 vessels boast a range of 1,600 nautical miles and a seven-day endurance, making them suitable for extended operations in diverse environments. They are designed for various missions, including intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, anti-air warfare, and anti-surface warfare.
As Indonesia continues its military modernization efforts, defence spending is projected to reach $9.7 billion by 2028. This contract follows Kongsberg Maritime’s recent agreement with Hindustan Shipbuilding to supply electric replenishment-at-sea equipment for the Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ships program, further solidifying Kongsberg’s role in enhancing naval capabilities in the region.
