Clydebuilt’s Dark Island: A Luxury Cruise Experience

Scottish firm Clydebuilt is set to launch the Dark Island, a luxury residential cruise ship designed for affluent global citizens. With 236 ultra-luxury suites, the ship aims to redefine cruise living. Construction began in 2019, emphasizing environmental sustainability and a lifespan of at least 50 years, surpassing the average 30-year lifespan of most passenger ships. The ship’s maiden voyage is now scheduled for 2028, following a delay from its original 2025 launch date.
A New Era of Luxury Living at Sea
The Dark Island will feature 12 decks and accommodate 724 residents alongside 540 crew members. Each suite varies in size from 420.6 square feet to 2,690 square feet, all boasting sea views. Residents can choose from one, two, or three-bedroom suites, allowing for personalization in interior design. The pricing for these suites, which previously ranged from $8 million to $110 million, may be adjusted based on the suite’s location and amenities, although no updates have been confirmed.
Clydebuilt aims to provide a luxury hotel-like experience onboard, complete with butler service. A yearly service fee covers a range of amenities, including Wi-Fi, excursions, spa treatments, and meals at various onboard restaurants. This model encourages a lifestyle approach to cruising, allowing residents to come and go as they please, rather than adhering to a traditional cruise schedule.
The Dark Island will embark on an 800-day world cruise for its inaugural journey, with suite owners having the unique opportunity to vote on the itinerary. However, the captain will make the final decision on the route. This level of involvement is rare in the cruise industry, providing suite owners with a sense of ownership and engagement in their travel experiences.
As the construction progresses, many are eagerly awaiting updates on the Dark Island. Unlike other recent cruise ventures that faced setbacks, Clydebuilt’s new build promises a fresh start for luxury cruising.
