SBM assessing potential for carbon capture modules on Petrobras floaters

Petrobras Explores Carbon Capture on FPSOs

Petrobras has engaged SBM Offshore to conduct a study on the potential implementation of carbon capture modules on Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units. This initiative aims to address emissions linked to oil and gas production, aligning with global sustainability goals. The study will leverage advanced engineering designs developed by SBM Offshore in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), utilizing MHI’s proprietary CO₂ capture technology.

Study Focus and Future Plans

The study will explore various configurations for carbon capture systems that could be installed on future Petrobras platforms. Key areas of investigation include the selection of turbine types, machinery setups, and the assessment of different gas flow rates and turbine power capacities. Additionally, the study will analyze varying CO₂ concentrations and gas compositions to determine the most effective capture methods.

MOL and Petrobras signed a CTV Time Charter Contract and MoU to Start Negotiations on Newbuilding CTV- Reducing CO2 Emissions and Costs Offloading Crude Oil from Sub-bed Oil Fields

In tandem with this study, Petrobras has signed two Protocols of Intent aimed at the re-use of oil and gas production platforms that are currently in the removal phase. The first agreement involves Brazil’s National Union of the Shipbuilding and Offshore Repair Industry (SINAVAL) and the Brazilian Association of Sea Economy Companies (ABEEMAR). The second agreement includes the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum and Natural Gas (IBP). These protocols are designed to foster collaboration and information exchange to identify opportunities for re-purposing decommissioned platforms.

Petrobras’ 2025-2029 Business Plan outlines the demobilization of ten platforms by 2029. The company is committed to exploring ways to re-use these facilities, aiming to reduce logistics costs and support the supplier base. This strategic approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances operational efficiency in Brazil’s offshore oil and gas sector.
