Submarine carrying tourists sinks off Egypt, 6 Russians dead
Tourist Submarine Tragedy Claims Six Lives in Egypt
CAIRO — A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, on Thursday when a tourist submarine sank during an underwater cruise, resulting in the deaths of six Russian nationals. The vessel, which was carrying 45 tourists and five crew members, went down approximately 1,000 meters from shore. While many passengers were rescued, over two dozen sustained injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Details of the Incident
The submarine, named “Sindbad,” was on a popular tour showcasing the vibrant coral reefs of the Red Sea when it sank. According to Red Sea governor Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi, rescue teams were dispatched promptly to the scene. The Russian consulate confirmed that all six fatalities were Russian citizens, including at least two children. Initially, the consulate reported that all passengers were Russian, but the Egyptian governor later clarified that the group included tourists from India, Norway, and Sweden.
Of the 39 tourists rescued, 29 were injured and required medical attention. Fortunately, no one remains unaccounted for, suggesting that all crew members were also successfully evacuated. The cause of the sinking is still under investigation, and authorities have not released further details.
Hurghada is renowned for its marine tourism, attracting divers and snorkelers eager to explore the Red Sea’s rich underwater ecosystem. The “Sindbad” submarine typically offers tours lasting between one to three hours, operating at depths of 20 to 25 meters (65 to 80 feet) to provide panoramic views of marine life through its large windows.
Impact on Tourism and Safety Concerns
This incident raises significant concerns about safety in Egypt’s tourism sector, which is vital to the country’s economy. In recent years, several accidents involving tourist vessels have occurred, including a yacht sinking in the Red Sea last November, which resulted in four drownings. As a result, many tour operators have either halted or restricted their activities in the region due to safety fears stemming from regional conflicts and adverse weather conditions.
The Egyptian government has been working to bolster safety measures for tourists, but incidents like this highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the industry. As investigations continue, the focus will remain on ensuring the safety of tourists and preventing future tragedies in this popular travel destination.
