Filipino Crew Under Investigation Receive Legal Support
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has announced that the 20 Filipino crew members aboard a ship under investigation in South Korea for allegedly carrying cocaine will receive enhanced legal assistance. This support comes in addition to the legal team provided by the shipping company. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that the crew is in good health and has not been detained or charged with any offenses.
Legal Assistance and Crew Welfare Ensured
The DMW is actively working to ensure the welfare of the Filipino seafarers aboard the MV Lutina, a Norwegian-flagged bulk carrier. Cacdac stated that the Philippine embassy and the Migrant Workers office in South Korea will collaborate with the shipping company’s lawyers to formulate a robust legal defense for the crew. “Our strategy right now is to guide and advise them throughout the investigatory process and to provide the best legal advice and defense,” he emphasized.
Undersecretary Felicitas Bay reassured that all crew members are in good health and that their basic needs are being met. “Their entitlements, allotments, wages, food supplies, and other necessities are continuously provided by the ship owner,” she noted. The DMW has also initiated contact with the families of the seafarers to offer reassurance and support during this challenging time. Cacdac mentioned that they have already met with six family representatives in Metro Manila to discuss the assistance available from the government.
The situation remains fluid as the investigation continues, but the DMW is committed to providing ongoing support to the crew and their families, ensuring that they are not left without resources during this period of uncertainty.
