Fire Erupts at Chevron's Angola Oil Platform, 17 Injured

A significant fire broke out early this morning at Chevron’s Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) oil platform, located off the coast of Angola. The incident, which occurred around 3 AM local time, resulted in injuries to 17 individuals, four of whom are reported to be in critical condition. Fortunately, all personnel aboard the platform have been accounted for. The BBLT platform, which has living accommodations for approximately 157 staff members, was undergoing its annual maintenance during a scheduled shutdown that began on May 1.

Chevron’s Angolan subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company, managed to extinguish the fire swiftly. The company activated emergency response protocols and notified the relevant authorities immediately following the incident. The platform is situated in Block 14, roughly 97 kilometers offshore from the Cabinda coast, and is a key asset in Chevron’s operations in the region.
