Rauma Shipyard launches first Squadron 2020 corvette

First Pohjanmaa-Class Corvette Launched for Finnish Navy

Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has successfully launched the first Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette, marking a significant milestone in the Finnish Navy’s Squadron 2020 project. The keel for this advanced vessel was laid in April 2022, and it is designed to operate effectively in all Baltic Sea conditions. RMC is set to build a total of four corvettes, enhancing the naval capabilities of Finland.

Significant Milestone for Rauma Shipyard

The launch of the first Pohjanmaa-class corvette is a testament to RMC’s commitment to delivering complex and high-quality vessels. RMC CEO Mika Nieminen emphasized the shipyard’s readiness, stating, “Rauma shipyard is now in peak condition.” The Squadron 2020 project is progressing on schedule, with plans to accelerate the construction of the remaining corvettes as work continues. This initiative is expected to generate over 3,600 person-years of employment in Finland, showcasing its economic impact.

RMC has made substantial investments in the Rauma shipyard to enhance its shipbuilding infrastructure and production capacity. These improvements include a multi-purpose hall specifically designed for corvette construction, ensuring optimal working conditions and adherence to safety standards. Additionally, investments have been made in steel production capabilities, a launching barge, and heavy transfer ramps, all aimed at boosting efficiency and quality in shipbuilding.

Project director Timo Ståhlhammar highlighted the collaborative efforts involved in the project, stating, “The newly launched vessel is a strong indication of the close and goal-oriented cooperation between the Finnish Government, the Finnish Defense Forces, and our industrial partners.” This partnership underscores the strategic importance of the Squadron 2020 project in advancing Finland’s naval capabilities.
