Kongsberg Maritime selected by Samsung Heavy Industries for 9-ship Shuttle
Kongsberg Maritime Secures Major Contract for Shuttle Tankers

Kongsberg Maritime has landed a pivotal contract with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to provide advanced technology packages for nine new Dynamic Positioning (DP) Shuttle Tankers. These vessels are being built for the Greek shipowner Tsakos Group and will be chartered by Brazilian energy logistics firm Transpetro, aimed at enhancing offshore operations in Brazil’s pre-salt oil fields. The integration of Kongsberg’s systems promises to elevate the operational efficiency and safety of these vessels.
Comprehensive Technology Integration for Enhanced Operations
The nine shuttle tankers will be outfitted with a robust suite of Kongsberg Maritime systems, tailored to meet the demanding operational requirements of offshore environments. Central to this integration is the K-Pos DP2 system, which ensures precise station-keeping capabilities, allowing the vessels to maintain their position in challenging dynamic conditions. This is crucial for operations that take place far from shore, where stability and reliability are paramount.
In addition to the K-Pos system, Kongsberg will supply the K-IMS Information Management System and the K-Chief Integrated Automation System. These systems will facilitate centralized control and monitoring of vessel operations, enhancing overall efficiency. The vessels will also incorporate the AutoChief 600 propulsion control system, which will optimize propulsion and power management, ensuring smooth and effective operation.
To further bolster cargo management, the K-Gauge (CLS) tank level gauging system will provide accurate and reliable monitoring of cargo levels. Each vessel will feature a complete single Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) shaftline, equipped with an 8.6-meter propeller, as part of Kongsberg’s comprehensive delivery. This fully integrated solution is designed to improve safety, efficiency, and environmental performance across the fleet.
Tommy Andree Hove, Sales Director for Advanced Offshore Units at Kongsberg Maritime, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “This contract highlights the strength of our integrated technology offering and our ability to support complex offshore operations with reliable, efficient, and future-ready solutions.” Construction of the vessels will take place at SHI’s shipyard in South Korea, with the first deliveries expected to commence in 2027.
