North Star orders SOV pair at Vard

North Star Orders Two New Offshore Wind Vessels

North Star, a UK-based offshore vessel operator, has made significant strides in the offshore wind sector by placing an order for two new service operation vessels (SOVs) from Norwegian shipbuilder Vard. These vessels are designed to bolster offshore wind operations across the UK and Europe, showcasing the growing demand for sustainable energy support. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery by late 2027, with the second following in 2028.

Innovative Design and Features

The newly ordered vessels are based on the advanced Vard 4 19 design, which has been specifically developed for offshore wind support. Each vessel will measure 87.5 meters in length and 19.5 meters in beam, equipped with a motion-compensated gangway that includes an integrated elevator and a boat landing system. These vessels are built to accommodate up to 120 personnel, ensuring the necessary support for extensive offshore operations.

Environmental considerations are central to the design of these SOVs. They will incorporate battery hybrid propulsion systems, with the capability for future conversion to methanol operation, aligning with North Star’s commitment to sustainable practices. The construction of the first SOV will commence at Vard Braila in Romania, while final outfitting and delivery will occur at one of Vard’s Norwegian facilities, anticipated for the fourth quarter of 2027. The second unit will be constructed and delivered from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, set for the fourth quarter of 2028. The financial details of the order have not been disclosed.

Strengthening Partnerships and Future Goals

This recent order marks a significant addition to North Star’s portfolio, bringing the total number of offshore wind vessels contracted with Vard to ten. Previously, North Star had ordered four SOVs and two commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), in addition to two vessels based on Vard designs being constructed at third-party yards. In a statement, North Star emphasized the importance of their partnership with Vard, highlighting that “VARD has been a long-standing and trusted partner.”

North Star is actively working towards a goal of delivering 40 hybrid offshore wind vessels by 2040, a response to the increasing demand for operations and maintenance support services in the renewable energy sector. Following its acquisition by private equity firm Partners Group in 2022, the company continues to expand its capabilities and commitment to offshore wind energy growth.
