Wah Kwong and SPG Unite for Green Shipping

Wah Kwong NatPower and Shandong Port Group (SPG) have forged a strategic partnership aimed at advancing large-scale shore power and ship charging initiatives. This collaboration kicks off with projects at Qingdao Port International, one of the globe’s most automated terminals, and focuses on developing innovative business models for electric vessels. The agreement seeks to establish technology exchanges and lay the groundwork for green shipping corridors connecting China and Europe.

Driving Electrification in Shipping

The primary goal of this partnership is to accelerate the electrification of maritime vessels. By pioneering new charging applications for ship propulsion, the collaboration aims to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels both at berth and while at sea. This initiative is crucial for promoting sustainable practices within the shipping industry, which has long been associated with high carbon emissions.

Under the terms of the memorandum, Wah Kwong NatPower and SPG will leverage SPG’s extensive experience in shore power supply. This collaboration will enhance NatPower’s global shore power services network, linking SPG’s ports to the emerging global Green Corridors. The partnership will also focus on exporting and implementing these innovative solutions, beginning with joint projects in Hong Kong and mainland China, before expanding into European markets.

By establishing one-stop charging solutions for international shipping lines, this partnership is set to play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions on a large scale. The initiative is expected to accelerate the energy transition across key global shipping hubs, making a significant impact on the industry’s environmental footprint.

“Together, we are turning ambition into action and creating the infrastructure that will power the next era of sustainable shipping,” stated Stefano D.M. Sommadossi, CEO of NatPower Marine UK and joint director of Wah Kwong NatPower. Zhang Baohua, general manager of Qingdao Port International, emphasized the shared vision of developing green port infrastructure to reduce emissions in shipping, which is vital for establishing Qingdao as a leading international shipping center.
