Another yard joins LNG elite as DSIC delivers Sea Spirit

China Enters LNG Carrier Market with Sea Spirit

China has made a significant breakthrough in the competitive field of shipbuilding with the recent delivery of its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, the Sea Spirit, by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC). This milestone, achieved in Dalian, represents a crucial step for China as it ventures into a sector traditionally dominated by South Korea’s leading shipbuilders. The Sea Spirit, boasting a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters, showcases advanced technology and adaptability to global shipping standards.

Significance of the Delivery

The delivery of the Sea Spirit has been hailed by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation as a monumental achievement in the shipbuilding industry. LNG carriers are known for their technical complexity, requiring sophisticated containment and reliquefaction systems, along with precise controls for temperature and pressure. By successfully constructing this vessel, DSIC has enhanced its reputation and solidified its position in the LNG market, which is often viewed as the “crown jewel” of shipbuilding.

Northern Lights’ first CO2 transport ship ready for delivery

Equipped with the widely utilized GTT Mark III membrane system, the Sea Spirit is designed for compatibility with most global LNG terminals, furthering its operational versatility. The vessel was commissioned by China Merchants Energy Shipping, which began its LNG newbuild program with DSIC in 2022, initially ordering just one ship. However, that order has expanded to a total of eight vessels, reflecting growing confidence in DSIC’s capabilities.

The management of the Sea Spirit will be handled by OPearl, a collaborative venture involving China Merchants, CNOOC, and NYK. This joint effort is focused on managing LNG tonnage for CNOOC’s trading segment. While Hudong–Zhonghua has established itself as the sole Chinese yard with a proven record in delivering large LNG carriers, DSIC’s achievement with the Sea Spirit marks it as a formidable competitor in this specialized market. Additionally, Jiangnan Shipyard is also on the rise, supported by orders from QatarEnergy, ensuring a broader Chinese presence in the LNG sector.
