Nova Marine Carriers breaks into New Zealand market with MPP newbuild

New Joint Venture to Enhance Chatham Islands Supply

Lugano-based Nova Marine Carriers has partnered with New Zealand’s McCallum Bros in a significant 50/50 joint venture aimed at modernizing supply services to the Chatham Islands. The collaboration won a government tender to replace the aging multipurpose vessel servicing the islands, set to introduce a new ship by mid-2027. This vessel will play a critical role in transporting essential goods, including livestock, fuel, and vehicles, to the island communities located 800 kilometers east of New Zealand.

Innovative Vessel Designed for Diverse Needs

The successful proposal from the MBL/Nova Marine partnership centers around a new multipurpose vessel (MPP) designed to efficiently carry containers, fuel, vehicles, and livestock. Developed in conjunction with RINA and Nova’s technical office in Lugano, the vessel is expected to handle approximately 70,000 stock units annually under a minimum voyage contract. This new service is anticipated to provide a vital lifeline for the Chatham Islands, which have faced challenges due to the reliability issues of the Southern Tiare, a 1,200 dwt vessel that has been in operation for nearly four decades.

The tender was issued by New Zealand’s Ministry of Transport, reflecting the need for a reliable and sustainable long-term solution for island supply. Officials determined that the joint venture’s plan offered the best value for the future, ensuring that the communities will have consistent access to essential goods and resources over the next two decades.

McCallum Bros, a fourth-generation family business, brings extensive local expertise in coastal shipping and transport, while Nova Marine, controlled by the Romeo and Gozzi families, has a strong global presence as a leader in cement shipping. This venture marks Nova Marine’s inaugural entry into the Oceania market, complementing its existing diversified fleet and cement shipping leadership.

A Strategic Move for Future Growth

Vincenzo Romeo, the CEO of Nova Marine Carriers, emphasized the importance of this joint venture for the company’s growth strategy. “For some time, we have been planning to enter the New Zealand shipping space,” he stated. Romeo described the collaboration with McCallum Bros as a pivotal moment for the company. He noted that in today’s uncertain market, achieving growth requires adaptability and a willingness to embrace challenges that once seemed insurmountable.

The partnership not only aims to enhance the supply chain for the Chatham Islands but also signifies a strategic move for Nova Marine to expand its operations. As the new vessel prepares to enter service in 2027, both companies are poised to make a lasting impact on regional shipping and logistics.
