Hanwha Defense USA Appoints Navy Veteran as Shipbuilding President

Hanwha Defense USA has named retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Tom Anderson as President of U.S. Shipbuilding, a strategic move aimed at enhancing the company’s maritime operations in America. With 34 years of naval experience, Anderson will oversee shipbuilding programs and operations at Hanwha’s recently acquired Philly Shipyard. His leadership comes at a crucial time as the company seeks to bolster U.S. maritime capacity through significant investments and technological advancements.

Strategic Leadership and Future Plans

Tom Anderson brings a wealth of experience to Hanwha Defense USA, having previously served as Program Executive Officer for Ships and acting Commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). In his new role, he will be responsible for shaping the future shipbuilding strategy and enhancing the infrastructure and workforce necessary for growth. Mike Smith, President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA, expressed enthusiasm about Anderson’s appointment, highlighting his distinguished naval career and leadership skills as vital assets for the company during this pivotal period for U.S. shipbuilding.

This appointment follows Hanwha’s $100 million acquisition of Philly Shipyard last December, which is now being revitalized as Hanwha Philly Shipyard. The company aims to strengthen its presence in the U.S. maritime sector by investing in advanced technologies and workforce training. Michael Coulter, President and CEO of Hanwha Global Defense, emphasized the company’s commitment to evolving into a multi-domestic entity that enhances technology and partnerships in the markets it serves.

Investments and Industry Impact

Hanwha is making substantial investments in its Philadelphia facility, with plans to introduce smart systems and technological advancements that are expected to create thousands of skilled manufacturing jobs in the U.S. maritime industry. The company has committed to a $5 billion infrastructure plan for Hanwha Philly Shipyard, which includes increasing production capacity through the installation of additional docks and quays, as well as the potential construction of a new block assembly facility.

In a significant development, Hanwha Shipping, a subsidiary of Hanwha Ocean, placed an order for 10 medium-range oil and chemical tankers at Hanwha Philly Shipyard. This order marks the largest U.S. commercial vessel order in over two decades, with the first tanker expected to be delivered by early 2029. This initiative aligns with South Korea’s “Make America Shipbuilding Great Again” initiative, a $150 billion partnership aimed at enhancing U.S. shipbuilding capabilities, including the construction of new shipyards and personnel training.
