Lithuania’s Ignitis Group Targets 700MW Offshore Wind Capacity

Lithuania’s state-owned Ignitis Group is set to compete in a significant tender for developing at least 700 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea. This initiative, undertaken through its subsidiary Ignitis Renewables, aims to bolster the country’s renewable energy capacity amid evolving energy demands. The tender process, overseen by Lithuania’s National Energy Regulatory Council, is expected to conclude by the end of 2025.

Details of the Tender Process

Ignitis Group’s participation in the tender marks a critical step in Lithuania’s renewable energy strategy. The tender, which was relaunched on June 9, 2025, allows potential developers to either submit a development fee or request financial support through a two-way contract for difference. The support ranges from €75.45 per megawatt-hour (MWh) to €125.74 per MWh, with terms indexed until the generation permit is obtained, lasting no longer than eight years post the development and operational permit acquisition.

Baltic Nations Strengthen Undersea Infrastructure Security

This tender was temporarily halted earlier this year to allow the government to reassess the conditions to ensure minimal impact on electricity prices for consumers. As the country transitions towards sustainable energy solutions, Ignitis Group has set a strategic goal of increasing its renewable capacity from 1.4 gigawatts (GW) in 2024 to between 4 and 5 GW by 2030. Currently, the company boasts an installed renewable capacity of 2.1 GW, reflecting its commitment to expanding Lithuania’s renewable energy landscape.

Future Implications for Lithuania’s Energy Sector

The outcome of this tender could significantly influence Lithuania’s energy sector and its approach to renewable energy development. With the winner expected to be announced by the end of 2025, the results will play a crucial role in shaping the future of offshore wind energy in the region. By investing in substantial offshore wind capacity, Lithuania aims to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and promote sustainable energy practices.

As the global energy landscape shifts towards greener alternatives, projects like this one are vital for meeting both national and international climate goals. The involvement of Ignitis Group highlights the growing importance of renewable energy sources in Lithuania’s strategy to meet future energy demands while addressing environmental concerns.
