Exmar and EemsEnergy Extend LNG Terminal Operations

Belgium-based Exmar has partnered with EemsEnergy Terminal to prolong the operation of the Eemshaven LNG import terminal beyond 2027. This collaboration will see Exmar owning and operating two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) with a combined capacity of approximately 190,000 cubic meters of LNG. The expansion aims to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of the terminal, securing Europe’s energy supply and diversifying LNG import options.
Strategic Developments at Eemshaven LNG Terminal
As part of the new agreement, Exmar plans to convert one of its existing LNG carriers into a state-of-the-art FSRU, which will replace the current unit at the Eemshaven terminal. This new facility will operate alongside the existing FSRU, significantly improving operational efficiency. EemsEnergy Terminal has announced its intention to charter both units from Exmar, ensuring continued access to the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) gas market for users.

The EemsEnergy Terminal, which has been operational since September 2022, currently manages around 8 billion cubic meters of LNG annually. Gasunie and Vopak, the joint venture behind the terminal, aim to increase this capacity to 10 billion cubic meters as part of their broader initiative to enhance open-access LNG infrastructure throughout Europe. To facilitate future capacity bookings, an open season is expected to conclude by early 2026. However, the extension of the terminal remains contingent upon a final investment decision.
Exmar is committed to collaborating closely with EemsEnergy and other stakeholders to develop a next-generation FSRU design, which is projected to remain operational until at least 2036. This strategic move not only addresses immediate energy needs but also positions the terminal as a key player in the evolving landscape of Europe’s energy supply chain.
