HD Hyundai Partners with Cochin Shipyard for Naval Projects

HD Hyundai deepens defense shipbuilding partnership in India

In a significant move to bolster India’s naval capabilities, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has entered into a partnership with Cochin Shipyard to jointly construct naval vessels and target upcoming procurement projects from the Indian Navy. This collaboration, announced on Tuesday, aims to enhance India’s defense sector as the country modernizes its naval fleet.

Strategic Collaboration for Naval Modernization

Cochin Shipyard, recognized as India’s largest state-owned shipyard, has a history of collaboration with HD Hyundai’s parent company, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. Their ongoing partnership includes initiatives in talent training, design enhancements, and supply-chain cooperation. The latest agreement marks a pivotal step as both entities prepare to bid for India’s landing platform dock project, which recently received initial approval from the Ministry of Defense.

As part of this bid, HD HHI will contribute its expertise in design and technology for the development of amphibious assault ships. Joo Won-ho, president of HD HHI’s naval and medium-size shipbuilding unit, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is an ideal partner for India’s naval modernization program.” He emphasized that this collaboration could serve as a crucial turning point for the company’s expansion into the Indian naval market.

India’s ongoing naval modernization efforts encompass a range of projects, including next-generation destroyers, landing ships, and advancements in nuclear propulsion systems. HD HHI recognizes the growing opportunities within India’s defense sector and aims to leverage its extensive experience in naval shipbuilding and technology collaboration with various countries.

Expanding Global Defense Footprint

HD HHI has established a solid reputation for supplying ships to the Korean Navy and is actively expanding its global presence in defense shipbuilding. The company has previously collaborated with Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest defense shipbuilder in the United States, and has engaged in naval vessel construction projects with the Philippines and Peru.

Looking ahead, HD HHI plans to integrate with its affiliate, HD Hyundai Mipo, in December. This integration is expected to enhance its global defense cooperation capabilities, drawing on Mipo’s extensive experience in managing overseas shipyards. With this strategic partnership and upcoming integration, HD HHI is well-positioned to contribute significantly to India’s naval modernization and strengthen its foothold in the global defense market.
