Cargo Ship Collision in Turkey: Liberty Harvest Damaged

In early December, the cargo vessel Liberty Harvest collided with a concrete pier while maneuvering in Marmaris, Turkey. The 175-meter-long ship, which was preparing to load luxury yachts, experienced engine failure, leading to the accident. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the crew or at the pier, although both the vessel and the structure sustained damage.

Incident Details and Aftermath

The incident occurred when the Liberty Harvest was navigating the Mediterranean Sea at Marmaris, Muğla. As the ship approached the port, it suffered an engine malfunction that left it unable to slow down. The vessel collided forcefully with the pier, resulting in significant damage to its bulbous bow. Despite the impact, the pier remained structurally sound, and no injuries were reported among the crew or at the dock.

Following the collision, the Liberty Harvest was towed to a location just outside Marmaris, where it dropped anchor. The ship remained out of service for a week while thorough inspections were conducted. Repair work on the damaged bow was completed, and the vessel successfully returned to service on December 21. After resuming operations, the Liberty Harvest proceeded into the harbor to begin loading its intended cargo of luxury yachts.

In response to the incident, the Turkish Coast Guard and local port authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the engine failure and the circumstances surrounding the collision. This inquiry aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of maritime operations in the region.
