Berge Bulk Launches Second Rotor Sail Project
Berge Bulk has successfully installed four innovative folding Rotor Sails on its Newcastlemax vessel, Berge Mer, in collaboration with Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd. This significant project, completed at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China, marks the second installation of its kind for Berge Bulk, following the earlier deployment on the Berge Neblina. The new Rotor Sails, designed to harness wind energy for auxiliary propulsion, aim to reduce fuel consumption and emissions during maritime voyages.
Successful Installation and First Voyage
The installation of the four 5-meter diameter and 35-meter tall Rotor Sails was finalized in December 2025. Shortly after, the Berge Mer embarked on its inaugural journey to Singapore, showcasing the effectiveness of this cutting-edge technology. The Rotor Sails, supplied by Anemoi, are engineered to capture wind power, providing additional propulsion that can significantly lower fuel usage and decrease harmful emissions associated with shipping operations.
This latest project builds on the experience gained from the previous installation of Rotor Sails on the Berge Neblina, which took place in June 2024. That vessel was the first in Berge Bulk’s fleet to utilize Anemoi’s technology. The insights gained from the earlier project have informed the installation on Berge Mer, enhancing confidence in the technology’s performance and aligning with Berge Bulk’s commitment to practical and scalable decarbonization strategies.

The folding design of the Rotor Sails allows them to be lowered when necessary, providing flexibility for port operations and compliance with air-draught restrictions. Notably, the sails can remain operational in extreme weather conditions; they simply cease to generate thrust when switched off, ensuring safety without compromising performance at sea.
Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, expressed pride in completing the second project with Berge Bulk. She emphasized that the integration of large-scale folding Rotor Sails into commercial bulk carriers like the Berge Mer demonstrates the practical application of wind propulsion technology. Urmston highlighted the importance of Berge Bulk’s ongoing trust in Anemoi’s innovative solutions.
