Turkey Launches First Naval Support Vessel for Portugal

ANKARA — The keel of Portugal’s inaugural naval support vessel was laid this week at the Ada Shipyard in Istanbul, marking a significant milestone in military collaboration between Turkey and Portugal. This event follows a contract signed by Turkish shipbuilder STM to construct two Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) and Logistics Support Ships, a deal finalized in Lisbon on December 17, 2024. Notably, this venture represents Turkey’s first military ship export to a European Union and NATO member state.

Key Features and Capabilities of the New Ships

The keel-laying ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including the defense ministers and naval commanders from both Turkey and Portugal. The newly designed ships are intended to enhance joint force projection, facilitate amphibious operations, and support humanitarian missions. Each vessel will be equipped with facilities for helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), complete with dedicated hangars for drone operations. Their modular design and integrated communication systems will allow for multi-mission adaptability, encompassing command and control functions, medical support, and disaster relief efforts.4

In addition to logistical support, these ships will be capable of transferring fuel and cargo at sea. They will also have the capacity to transport armored vehicles, which is crucial for supporting joint and amphibious operations. Each vessel will feature a stern ramp, enabling it to carry up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles. This capability is expected to significantly bolster Portugal’s naval forces, allowing its vessels to operate effectively for extended periods at sea.

Future Plans and Timeline for Delivery

The construction of these ships is part of Portugal’s Military Programming Law for 2023–24, aimed at strengthening its naval capabilities. STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz announced during the ceremony that the construction of the second ship is set to commence later this year, with the keel-laying scheduled for June 2026. STM plans to launch both ships in 2027, with an anticipated delivery date to the Portuguese Navy in 2028. This project not only underscores Turkey’s growing role in the defense sector but also enhances the operational capabilities of Portugal’s naval forces.
