Frontline Secures High-Value Charters for VLCCs
Frontline, a prominent player in the maritime industry controlled by John Fredriksen, has made headlines by securing one-year time charters for seven Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) at an impressive rate of $76,900 per day. This rate marks a significant milestone, as it has not been seen for decades. Following this remarkable achievement, Frontline’s chartering desk has continued to make waves in the market with additional high-value contracts.
In a recent move, Frontline has fixed two modern VLCCs in the spot market. The 2018-built Front Princess has been chartered to Nippon Global Tanker for $127,001 per day, while the 2023-built Front Beauly has been secured by HMM at an even higher rate of $137,807 per day. Both vessels are equipped with scrubbers and are contracted for periods of less than three months. This represents a significant increase compared to fixtures reported just five days earlier, which were approximately $50,000 per day lower for similar short spot voyages.
Strategic Fleet Restructuring and New Investments
These recent charter agreements come on the heels of a strategic reshuffle within Frontline’s VLCC fleet. The company has announced plans to sell eight first-generation VLCCs, built between 2015 and 2016, for a total of $831.5 million. Deliveries for these vessels are scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. This decision reflects Frontline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing operational efficiency.

In conjunction with the sale, Frontline has also lined up nine latest-generation, scrubber-fitted VLCC newbuildings from an affiliate of Fredriksen’s private vehicle, Hemen Holding. The total investment for these new vessels amounts to $1.224 billion. This strategic move not only positions Frontline to capitalize on the growing demand for modern, environmentally compliant vessels but also underscores the company’s proactive approach to fleet management in a rapidly evolving maritime landscape.
As Frontline continues to navigate the complexities of the shipping market, its recent chartering successes and fleet restructuring efforts highlight the company’s ambition to maintain a competitive edge. With a focus on modern vessels and strategic partnerships, Frontline is poised for continued growth in the VLCC sector.
