US Coast Guard Successfully Locates Distressed French Yacht Near Bermuda
In a coordinated international effort, local officials responded to a distress signal from the French sailing yacht Zion, located approximately 48 miles east-northeast of Bermuda. The US Coast Guard (USCG) played a crucial role in locating the vessel and ensuring the safety of its crew.
Emergency Response Initiated
The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a 406 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) distress alert from the Zion. A spokesperson from the center confirmed that the alert prompted immediate action, with the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Bermuda reaching out to RCC Gris-Nez in France for further investigation into the yacht’s details. The Zion is identified as a 35-foot white sloop, reportedly equipped with a life raft and a dinghy.
Given the rough weather conditions in the Bermuda area, the USCG East District (RCC Norfolk) was briefed on the situation and prepared for a potential search operation. The closest merchant vessel, the Marshall Islands-registered bulk carrier Genco Bourgogne, was 160 miles southeast of Bermuda. At the request of RCC Bermuda, the Genco Bourgogne diverted towards the distress location, although it remains approximately 24 hours away due to sea conditions and its maximum speed of 6 knots.
Successful Location of the Yacht and Crew
At 1:15 PM local time, a US Coast Guard HC-144 CASA aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod arrived at the EPIRB position and successfully located the Zion. The aircraft spotted the three crew members on deck, who appeared to be in good condition. Despite the successful sighting, attempts to drop marine VHF radios to the yacht via parachute were unsuccessful in two separate attempts.

After assessing the situation, the HC-144 aircraft departed the scene at 3:05 PM to refuel in Bermuda. The case remains open as authorities continue to monitor the situation. The coordinated response highlights the effectiveness of international maritime cooperation in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
As the situation develops, further updates will be provided by the relevant authorities. The successful location of the Zion underscores the importance of emergency preparedness and the role of modern technology in maritime safety.
