Water Ingress Incident on the Scheldt River Involves ‘Testudo’

On February 8, 2026, at approximately 10 p.m., the cargo vessel ‘Testudo‘ experienced a significant water ingress while navigating the Scheldt River near Berlare and Schoonaarde. The ship was transporting over 300 tons of fertilizer from Antwerp to Panheel when it unexpectedly took on water, forcing it to moor at an old quay belonging to the Allnex company near the Schoonaarde bridge, close to Dendermonde. The situation escalated as the bow of the ‘Testudo’ began to sink, raising concerns that the vessel might flood completely.

Emergency Response and Stabilization Efforts

In response to the unfolding emergency, multiple fire departments, including those from Dendermonde, Wichelen, Lebbeke, Lokeren, and Berlare, were dispatched to the scene with large contingents. The police, maritime police, and De Vlaamse Waterweg (Flemish Waterway) also arrived to assist in the situation. A second barge, the ‘Veridis Quo’ (MMSI: 244690135), which was navigating behind the ‘Testudo’, moored alongside the freighter. This timely intervention helped stabilize the ship and protect it from the strong river current.

Firefighters worked diligently to pump water out of the technical rooms of the ‘Testudo,’ and by midnight, they had successfully removed the water without discovering any additional leaks. As the situation improved, the Binnenvaartcommissieto granted permission for the ‘Testudo’ to proceed a limited distance to a safer berth at the ferry point in Schellebelle. This decision was made to prevent the vessel from becoming stuck in Schoonaarde, especially as the water level began to decline due to tidal influences.

Investigation and Future Steps

By 3 a.m. on February 9, the ‘Testudo’ was safely secured at a berth with adequate water depth, located at position 51° 01′ N 003° 56′ E. Following this stabilization, an investigation was initiated to determine the cause of the water ingress. Authorities will work closely with the inland waterway police to assess the situation further. Once the investigation is complete, a decision will be made regarding when the ship can continue its journey to its final destination.

This incident highlights the importance of immediate response and coordination among emergency services during maritime emergencies. The swift actions taken by the involved parties helped avert potential disaster and ensured the safety of the vessel and its cargo.
