Towed Fuel Barge Grounds Near San Juan
On February 9, 2026, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan, alongside local emergency response teams, responded to an incident involving the 265-foot fuel barge ‘Defiant’. The vessel ran aground near the San Juan Harbor port entrance, close to the historic San Felipe del Morro Castle in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The barge was being towed from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands by another vessel named ‘Storm’ when the towline broke, leading to the grounding.
The grounding occurred in an area protected by a large rock breakwater located about 70 feet offshore, designed to minimize wave action. Additionally, a riprap revetment lines the shoreline, providing further protection. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or missing crew members, and at this time, there are no signs of fuel pollution in the surrounding waters. Coast Guard marine units on the scene are actively monitoring the situation to ensure safety and environmental protection.
Response Measures and Ongoing Investigation
The Port of San Juan remains open to vessel traffic, as the ‘Defiant’ is not obstructing the harbor entrance or navigable waterways. The Coast Guard has activated an Incident Management Team to oversee the response efforts. They have also issued Safety Marine Information Broadcasts to keep maritime traffic informed about the situation and any necessary precautions.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the grounding. They are urging the public to avoid the area so that response teams can work safely and effectively. The focus remains on preventing any potential worsening of the situation while ensuring the safety of both the crew and the environment.
