NYK’s Methanol-Fuelled Bulk Carrier Achieves Significant GHG Emission Reduction
Japanese shipping giant NYK has announced a groundbreaking achievement in maritime sustainability. The company’s methanol-fuelled bulk carrier, named *Green Future*, is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 65% compared to traditional fuel sources. This significant reduction was confirmed during a voyage that commenced in September 2025, where the vessel utilized low-carbon methanol bunkered in Ulsan, South Korea.
The *Green Future*, operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, loaded a cargo of copper concentrate for the mining firm BHP in January 2026. The discharge of this cargo is scheduled to take place in China in March 2026. NYK’s emissions reduction estimate is based on a well-to-wake analysis, which accounts for emissions generated from fuel production to its usage onboard the vessel. The methanol used for this voyage is certified under the ISCC EU sustainability standards, further emphasizing the commitment to environmentally friendly practices in shipping.

NYK has described this operation as the first instance of low-carbon methanol being utilized on an oceangoing bulk carrier, according to its internal research. This pioneering effort not only showcases the potential of alternative fuels in reducing emissions but also supports cargo owners in achieving their scope 3 emissions targets. The vessel, with a capacity of 81,500 m³, was delivered in May 2025 under a charter agreement with Kambara Kisen.
