Rescue Operation Successfully Returns Crew of Angel Wings to South Africa

The crew of the Cape2Rio sailing vessel Angel Wings, which tragically sank after suffering a dismasting, has returned safely to South Africa. The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) confirmed on Friday that the three crew members—Sibusiso Sizatu, Tshepo Renaldo Mohale, and Andrea Myburg—were rescued by the bulk carrier MV Bryant and have since been safely returned home.

The incident occurred approximately 900 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro during the vessel’s return journey to Cape Town. The decision to abandon Angel Wings was made in consultation with the MV Bryant’s captain, as the crew faced the complete loss of all spars that could have been used to set up a jury rig. Deteriorating weather conditions, with winds of 20-25 knots and waves reaching 4-5 meters, further complicated the situation. Given the distance from safe harbor and the unpredictable nature of the South Atlantic weather, the crew’s safety became the priority.

Coordinated Rescue Efforts by South African Navy

Upon learning of the situation, the South African Navy quickly offered to intercept the MV Bryant as it continued its voyage around Cape Horn toward Singapore. With the cooperation of the vessel’s master and agent, the Navy coordinated a successful rendezvous approximately 60 nautical miles south of Cape Point. A favorable weather window allowed the Navy to deploy an inflatable boat, facilitating a safe transfer of the sailors to SAS Adam Kok III, commanded by Commander Lindeni Jane Xakane.

After spending the night aboard the naval vessel, the crew was transferred to another ship for the final leg of their journey to Simon’s Town. The RCYC expressed its gratitude to the Navy for their swift response and commitment to ensuring the safe return of the sailors. A contingency from the RCYC, including Club Commodore David Garrard, was present to welcome the sailors back on home soil, marking a heartfelt reunion after their harrowing experience.

The RCYC also extended its appreciation to the master, crew, and owners of the MV Bryant for their decisive intervention and professionalism during the rescue operation. Their warm hospitality played a crucial role in the successful outcome of this challenging situation. The RCYC’s gratitude reflects the strong community spirit and cooperation that exists within the maritime sector, especially in times of crisis.
