Anchor Issues Cause Temporary Delay for MSC Shannon III
On February 27, 2026, the container ship ‘MSC Shannon III‘ encountered anchor problems while navigating the Western Scheldt near Waarde. The incident occurred in the afternoon but was resolved within a few hours, allowing the vessel to continue its journey. Fortunately, there were no disruptions to other shipping traffic during this time.
The ship was traveling from Antwerp to Montreal when it experienced uncertainties regarding its anchor connection. In response, Rijkswaterstaat deployed a patrol boat to the scene. Despite the anchor issues, the ‘MSC Shannon III’ remained well-positioned, and with a draught of 10.3 meters, it did not become stuck in the sand as the outgoing tide flowed. The anchor, which had become dislodged, ended up resting on the riverbed along with part of its chain.
MSC will be responsible for the eventual removal of the anchor and chain from the Western Scheldt. By around 4:00 p.m., the ship was able to resume its voyage, with an estimated time of arrival in Montreal set for March 7, 2026.
