Navy Names Final Pathfinder-Class Ship After Explorer

The U.S. Navy has announced the naming of its latest survey ship, the Robert Ballard, honoring the renowned oceanographer and explorer. This vessel will be the eighth and final addition to the Pathfinder-class, which is designed for advanced marine surveying. Currently under construction at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, the ship is set to enhance the Navy’s capabilities in oceanographic research and data collection.

Advanced Features and Capabilities

The Robert Ballard will be operated by the Military Sealift Command and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to support its mission. The ship will feature two multi-purpose cranes and five winches, enabling it to conduct a variety of marine operations. Among its sophisticated equipment are multibeam echosounders, towed sonars, and expendable sensors, all crucial for detailed underwater exploration.

This vessel is specifically designed to carry two self-propelled, sonar-equipped hydrographic survey launches. These launches will facilitate data collection in coastal areas with depths ranging from 10 to 600 meters, as well as in deeper waters reaching up to 4,000 meters. The Robert Ballard is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the Navy’s understanding of marine environments, contributing to both scientific research and national security efforts.
