Suisse-Atlantique Expands Fleet with New Ultramax Order in China

Swiss bulker owner Suisse-Atlantique is set to enhance its fleet with a significant order for five ultramax bulk carriers. The company, led by the Andre family, has contracted with Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering (JNS) in China for the construction of these vessels. Each of the 63,500 deadweight tonnage (dwt) bulkers is priced at approximately $33.5 million. The delivery of the ships is scheduled for 2028 and 2029, marking a strategic move for Suisse-Atlantique as it continues to grow its operations.

This order represents Suisse-Atlantique’s first newbuilding contract in China, a notable shift for the company. The Guangdong-based shipyard, JNS, is recognized for its focus on building energy-efficient handy and ultramax bulk carriers, aligning with the industry’s increasing emphasis on sustainability and efficiency. The addition of these new vessels will bolster Suisse-Atlantique’s existing fleet, which currently comprises around 10 bulk carriers ranging from handy to post-panamax sizes.

A Historical Perspective on Suisse-Atlantique’s Fleet Development

Founded in 1941, Suisse-Atlantique has a long-standing history in the maritime industry. The company has previously sourced its vessels from various shipyards, including those in Japan and Vietnam. The last time Suisse-Atlantique ordered new tonnage was in 2019, when it contracted two ultramaxes at Tsuneishi Cebu in the Philippines. This recent order signifies a renewed commitment to expanding its fleet and modernizing its operations.
