New Play Area Construction Begins in Downtown Grand Junction
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Exciting developments are underway in downtown Grand Junction as construction has commenced on a vibrant new play area at the intersection of 5th and Main Street. This innovative project will introduce a ship-themed play area, a play mound with artificial turf and a slide, as well as interactive sidewalk games like oversized chess, all designed to enhance the community space. City officials are optimistic that these improvements will not only benefit residents but also support local businesses.
Transforming Underused Space into a Community Hub
The new play area replaces an outdated fountain that had been non-operational for several years. City officials recognized the need to revitalize this underused space, leading to the decision to remove the fountain and create a more engaging environment. Ken Sherbenou, the parks and recreation director for Grand Junction, emphasized the importance of this transformation. “We were able to get some utilization out of the space, but this will just be next level in terms of removing that old use that never really should have been put in Main Street,” he stated.
The project has been shaped by extensive public engagement, involving collaboration with the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and local business owners. Sherbenou noted that the aim was to complement the existing downtown atmosphere while enhancing its appeal. “We worked through a lot of public processes… really trying to complement what’s already downtown,” he explained. The new features are expected to create a welcoming environment that encourages community interaction and supports local commerce.

Completion Timeline and Community Impact
City officials anticipate that the construction will be completed by May, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area. They have assured residents that there will be no additional closures to streets or sidewalks beyond what is currently in place. The new play area is designed to be a family-friendly destination, fostering a sense of community and encouraging outdoor activities.
As the project progresses, city leaders express pride in their efforts to create an inviting space that not only enhances the downtown experience but also strengthens the local economy. “We’re really proud to be able to help create a really wonderful, inviting space that then has the effect of supporting businesses, and it’s a really great partnership,” Sherbenou remarked. The new play area is set to become a cherished addition to Grand Junction, offering residents and visitors alike a place to gather, play, and enjoy the vibrant downtown atmosphere.
