Tragic Bus Plunge Claims 18 Lives in Bangladesh

A devastating accident occurred in central Bangladesh when a bus carrying approximately 50 passengers plunged into the River Padma while attempting to board a ferry. The incident, which took place on Wednesday afternoon in Rajbari district, has resulted in at least 18 confirmed fatalities, including ten women and two children. The bus was en route to Dhaka from the southwestern district of Kushtia, coinciding with the return of workers after the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Rescue Operations Underway Amid Adverse Conditions

Following the tragic plunge, many passengers managed to swim to safety, but several others were trapped inside the bus. Dewan Sohel Rana, a fire official involved in the rescue efforts, reported that a rescue vessel was deployed late Wednesday to assist in lifting the submerged bus. Rescuers worked tirelessly throughout the night to recover the bodies, with 18 confirmed dead by Thursday morning. The recovery efforts faced significant challenges due to strong currents and inclement weather, which hampered the operations.

As of now, it remains unclear if there are any additional victims still unaccounted for. The local Fire Service and Civil Defence Department confirmed the identities of the deceased, highlighting the tragic loss of life, particularly among vulnerable groups such as women and children. The community is mourning this heartbreaking incident, and the authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future tragedies.
